When employment in Thailand ends, the work permit and the immigration permission based on that employment must be handled as connected but separate matters. Delaying either step can create overstay or compliance problems.

Do not assume you automatically receive extra time. The date written into the passport or formally granted by Immigration controls the permitted stay. A work permit cancellation receipt is not permission to remain.

Documents to collect before access disappears

  • Employment termination letter stating the actual final date.
  • Copies of the work permit and cancellation confirmation.
  • Passport copies and current extension or stay stamp.
  • Company documents requested for the cancellation.
  • Tax, salary and social-security records that may be needed for a future application.

Why timing matters

An employment-based extension may cease to have a valid basis when employment ends. The practical cancellation date, any short period formally allowed for departure, and the possibility of changing status depend on the facts and the Immigration office. Do not plan around an assumed seven-day grace period unless it has actually been granted and recorded.

Overstay begins after the permitted stay ends. A pending job offer, unfinished work-permit cancellation or airline booking does not extend the immigration stamp. See our Thailand overstay guide.

Changing to a new employer

A new job does not automatically transfer the old employer’s work permit or extension. The old cancellation and new application must be sequenced carefully. Depending on timing and eligibility, the person may need a new Non-B visa, a new work-permit application, an immigration extension or travel outside Thailand.

Before leaving Thailand

Confirm the final stay date, retain copies of all cancellation evidence, settle relevant tax or employer paperwork and check whether any re-entry permit becomes irrelevant when the underlying extension is cancelled. At departure, keep evidence accessible in case an officer asks about the status change.

Frequently asked questions

Does cancelling the work permit cancel the visa automatically?

Not necessarily as an administrative act. The work and immigration authorities handle different permissions, so both sides must be checked.

Can I remain until the old extension date?

Do not assume so when the extension was granted on employment that has ended. Obtain a clear decision and stamp from Immigration.

Can I start with the new employer immediately?

Only when the new immigration and work authorization requirements are satisfied. An offer letter alone is not sufficient.
