A Thailand work permit is the authorization that allows a foreign national to perform approved work under stated conditions. It should not be confused with the visa or permission of stay that allows the person to remain in Thailand.

Current process: Thailand’s Department of Employment operates the official e-WorkPermit system for relevant foreign-worker applications. The exact route depends on immigration status, employer, occupation and any special legal framework.

Who normally needs authorization?

A foreign national performing work in Thailand generally needs the appropriate authorization unless a specific exemption applies. “Work” can be interpreted more broadly than receiving a Thai salary. Unpaid, remote, directorial and short-term activities should be assessed by their real facts rather than their label.

Visa status and work authorization

DocumentMain function
Visa or permission of stayControls entry and lawful stay for a stated purpose.
Work permit or qualifying authorizationControls whether, for whom, where and in what role work may be performed.

A Non-B visa is commonly associated with employment but does not replace the work permit.

Typical employer and applicant evidence

  • Passport, current immigration status, photograph and address details.
  • Employment agreement, job description, qualifications and professional licences where relevant.
  • Company registration, shareholder, tax, VAT and social-security records.
  • Evidence concerning workplace, staffing, capital and any sector-specific approval.
  • Power of attorney and signed forms where a representative acts.

The exact checklist differs by route. BOI-promoted companies, LTR holders, urgent work and other categories may follow different procedures.

e-WorkPermit process

  1. Employer and applicant register and verify their details in the applicable system.
  2. The correct application is selected and supporting documents uploaded.
  3. Application charges are paid and the file is reviewed.
  4. Further evidence is supplied if requested.
  5. After approval, the permit fee and any identity or collection appointment are completed as directed.
Approval is specific. Do not assume a permit covers a different employer, location, role or occupation. Check the recorded conditions before starting or changing duties.

Changes, renewal and employment ending

Renewal should begin early enough to coordinate the work authorization with the permitted stay. A change of employer or material duties may require a fresh application or amendment. When employment ends, the employer, permit and immigration processes must be coordinated; read our cancellation guide.

Common compliance mistakes

  • Starting work while an application is still pending.
  • Assuming remote or unpaid activity is automatically outside the rules.
  • Working outside the permitted role or for another entity.
  • Allowing the work permit and immigration extension dates to drift apart.
  • Failing to deal promptly with status after employment ends.

What we check before a work-permit application

  1. the real employer, job description and work location;
  2. the applicant’s immigration status and whether a Non-B or another route is appropriate;
  3. company registration, licences, paid-up capital, Thai payroll and social-security evidence relevant to the route;
  4. whether the occupation is prohibited or subject to conditions;
  5. the sequence for visa, work permit, start date, renewal and any later change of employer or role.

DTV, tourist status and company directorship should never be treated as automatic permission to perform day-to-day work for a Thai business. For the legal distinctions and common misconceptions, read the independent Work Permit Rules for Expats guide.

Work-permit planning: track both employment and immigration

Keep a single timeline for the employer’s submissions, your work permission and your immigration expiry date. Ask which Department of Employment procedure applies, whether the e-WorkPermit system is used and who is responsible for each document. An application reference is not automatically permission to begin work.

Check that the employer, role and any relevant conditions match the approved permission. Before changing employer, duties or other recorded details, ask whether an amendment, cancellation or new application is required. Keep the permit records accessible and plan renewals before either the work or immigration permission expires.

Do not apply ordinary company rules blindly to special categories. BOI-supported employment and LTR procedures can differ. In particular, the LTR Work-from-Thailand Professionals category is for work for an overseas employer and does not receive a Thai digital work permit. Coordinate family members’ status when the main holder’s employment basis changes.
