A border run, a visa run and a re-entry permit solve three different immigration problems. Choosing the wrong one may end an existing permission to stay, fail to provide the expected time or lead to refusal at the border.
Quick comparison
| Action | What it does | What it does not do |
|---|---|---|
| Border run | Leave Thailand and seek a fresh entry | Does not guarantee admission or a particular length of stay |
| Visa run | Travel abroad to apply for or collect a new visa | Does not preserve an existing extension |
| Re-entry permit | Protect an existing permission to stay during travel | Does not extend the expiry date |
Border run: a new admission decision
On return, an immigration officer makes a new admission decision. A visa exemption is not an automatic right of entry, and repeated short exits can attract questions about the traveller’s real purpose, funds, accommodation and onward plans. Check current entry rules and never assume a previous admission guarantees the next one.
Visa run: applying for a new visa
A genuine visa run normally means travelling to a Thai embassy or consulate abroad to apply for a visa. Requirements, appointments, processing times and acceptance of non-resident applicants vary by mission. Confirm the chosen embassy’s current official instructions before paying for travel.
Re-entry permit: protecting time already granted
If you hold an extension of stay and simply wish to travel, a re-entry permit is often the relevant tool. It preserves the existing admitted-until date; it does not add time. Leaving without it may cancel the remaining extension.
Which option fits?
- You already have a valid annual extension: check whether you need a re-entry permit.
- You need a different visa: research a proper overseas visa application.
- You expect a new visa-exempt entry: understand that admission remains discretionary.
- Your stay is nearly over: review lawful extension options before assuming travel is the answer.
