Thailand’s Non-Immigrant B visa, usually called the Non-B, is used for qualifying business and employment purposes. It provides an immigration basis for the intended activity, but it is not itself permission to start work.
Who commonly uses a Non-B visa?
- Foreign nationals taking employment with a Thai company or qualifying organisation.
- Company directors or business visitors whose activities require Non-B status.
- Teachers and other professionals sponsored by an eligible employer.
- Applicants entering to complete a work-permit process, where the relevant route allows it.
The correct subcategory and documents depend on the proposed activity. A meeting, paid employment and managing a Thai company are not automatically treated in the same way.
Typical supporting documents
The responsible embassy or e-Visa category may request a passport, photograph, proof of residence, travel details and financial evidence. The Thai sponsor may need to provide an invitation or employment letter, company registration documents, shareholder information, tax and VAT records, office evidence and details of the proposed position. Lists vary by post and case.
Application sequence
- Define the exact business or employment purpose.
- Confirm that the Thai sponsor and proposed role meet the applicable requirements.
- Obtain the current checklist from Thai e-Visa or the competent embassy.
- Submit the visa application and respond to any request for further evidence.
- After entry, check the permitted stay and complete any work-permit or extension process before the relevant deadline.
Non-B visa versus extension of stay
A visa issued abroad is used for entry. The permission recorded at entry determines the initial period of stay. A later extension based on employment or business is a separate application made to Immigration and may require updated company, tax, salary and work-permit evidence.
Common reasons for delay
- Inconsistent job titles across the visa, employment and company documents.
- Company papers that are old, incomplete or unsigned.
- Applying under a category that does not match the real activity.
- Leaving too little time between entry, work-permit steps and stay expiry.
- Assuming an employer change transfers automatically to the new company.

Coordinate the employer’s file with your Non-B application
Ask the employer to identify the exact visa and work-authorisation route before setting a start date. The visa application, permission to stay and work permission are connected but separate decisions. Company registration, business activity and the offered role should be consistent across the employer’s letters and your application.
Confirm the receiving embassy’s current checklist and prepare identity, qualifications, employment and company documents together. Capital, Thai-staff ratios and financial records depend on the procedure and any applicable exemption; they should not be presented as universal rules for every employer or BOI-supported applicant.
Agree who handles work permission, the first stay extension and later renewals. Before an employer change or termination, review cancellation dates and replacement applications, including any dependant family members. A new employment contract alone does not transfer the old permission. Follow the authority’s instructions before starting work; special authorised exceptions require an individual check.
