Thailand’s e-Visa system is online, but your physical location still matters. This guide explains how to apply, what documents to prepare, whether you can travel while your application is being processed, and why the rules of the responsible Royal Thai Embassy or Consulate must be checked before you leave.

What is a Thailand e-Visa?

A Thailand e-Visa allows eligible travellers to apply online, upload supporting documents, pay the fee and receive an approved visa electronically. You must be outside Thailand when applying. Your passport, current location and purpose of travel determine which Thai diplomatic mission handles the application and which documents are required.

Start only through the official Thai e-Visa portal. An online application is not an application “from anywhere”: the mission you select must have jurisdiction over your current location.

Before starting your application

  • Confirm that you are outside Thailand and eligible to use the e-Visa system.
  • Select the visa category that matches your genuine purpose of travel.
  • Check the instructions of the embassy or consulate responsible for your location.
  • Prepare clear, complete files with matching names, dates and passport details.
  • Allow enough time for additional-document requests or an interview.
  • Avoid non-refundable travel commitments until you understand the relevant processing rules.

How to apply for a Thailand e-Visa

  1. Create an account on the official portal.
  2. Enter your passport country, current location and travel details.
  3. Select the responsible Royal Thai Embassy or Consulate.
  4. Choose the correct visa category and complete the form accurately.
  5. Upload the documents required for your particular application.
  6. Pay the fee and monitor your account and email for requests.
  7. Download the e-Visa confirmation after approval and check every detail.

Can you travel while your Thai e-Visa is processing?

Do not assume that you can leave the country where you applied simply because the process is online. The answer depends on the rules of the diplomatic mission handling your application.

The Royal Thai Embassy in London, for example, states that it cannot issue visas to applicants who are outside the United Kingdom, Ireland or UK Territories. It instructs applicants to remain physically within its jurisdiction during processing and warns that an application can be cancelled if the applicant has left before receiving the result. One reason is that an applicant may be asked to attend an interview.

This London guidance should not be presented as an identical worldwide rule. Thailand uses a central e-Visa platform, but individual embassies and consulates process applications within their own jurisdictions and may publish additional conditions.

Why leaving the jurisdiction can cause problems

Suppose you apply in the UK and take a short trip abroad before the decision. Your residence and passport may be unchanged, but the mission may still regard you as being outside its jurisdiction. Depending on its published rules, this could lead to cancellation, delay or the need for a new application and fee.

Before travelling, check the website of the exact mission shown on your application. If the guidance is unclear, contact that mission directly and obtain an answer before departure.

Current location and legal residence are not the same

An embassy may ask where you are physically located and may also require proof that you legally reside within its jurisdiction. Requirements vary by nationality, visa type and mission. Evidence can include residence permits, immigration status, proof of address or other locally specified documents.

Never select a mission merely because it appears faster or easier. Applying through a mission that does not cover your location can result in delay, refusal or cancellation.

Common supporting documents

The portal generates requirements for the selected visa and mission. Common evidence may include:

  • passport biodata page and a compliant recent photograph;
  • proof of current location or legal residence;
  • flight or travel plans and accommodation details;
  • financial evidence;
  • employment, study, family or business documents relevant to the visa category; and
  • additional evidence requested by the processing mission.

Names, dates, passport numbers and supporting information must be consistent throughout the application. Blurred documents, unexplained transactions or conflicting travel dates can cause avoidable questions.

How long does a Thailand e-Visa take?

There is no single processing time for every mission and visa category. Workload, nationality, document quality, interviews and requests for further evidence can all affect the timeline.

As an example, the London Embassy publishes an approximate standard processing time while advising applicants to apply well in advance. Treat the responsible mission’s current guidance—not an old forum post or another embassy’s timeline—as authoritative for your application.

After approval

Download and print the e-Visa confirmation. Check the name, passport number, visa category, number of entries and validity period immediately. Carry the confirmation for airline check-in and arrival in Thailand.

Visa validity is the period in which the visa may be used; it is not automatically the same as the permission to stay granted on arrival. An approved visa also does not guarantee admission. The final entry decision and permitted stay are determined by Thai immigration authorities at the border.

Frequently asked questions

Can I apply for a Thai e-Visa while in Thailand?

No. The official portal states that applicants must be outside Thailand when applying. An extension or eligible change of status inside Thailand is a separate immigration procedure.

Can I apply from any country?

Not necessarily. Your current location determines the mission that can process the application, and some missions require proof of legal or permanent residence.

Can I go on holiday while waiting for the result?

Check the rules of your processing mission before travelling. London specifically requires applicants to remain within its jurisdiction; other missions may publish different instructions.

Will my fee be refunded if the application is cancelled or refused?

Visa fees are generally non-refundable. Check the terms displayed by the responsible mission before paying.

Does e-Visa approval guarantee entry?

No. Approval allows you to travel and request entry. Immigration officers make the final admission decision.
