A tourist visa, visa-exempt entry and Visa on Arrival are different routes into Thailand. The correct option depends on your passport, where you apply, the purpose of the trip and how long you intend to remain.
Current update: Read the Royal Gazette-confirmed 30-day visa-exemption rules for 60 countries, effective 15 September 2026, including links to all four official notices.
Three common short-stay routes
| Route | What it means | Important point |
|---|---|---|
| Visa exemption | Eligible passport holders request entry without obtaining a visa in advance. | The immigration officer decides admission and stamps the permitted stay. |
| Tourist visa | A visa obtained before travel for tourism, commonly through Thai e-Visa or an embassy. | The visa’s validity is not the same as the number of days granted on entry. |
| Visa on Arrival | A separate facility for certain nationalities, normally with its own fee, evidence and stay period. | It is not another name for visa exemption. |
Documents travellers should prepare
- A passport meeting the applicable validity and blank-page requirements.
- Confirmed onward or return travel within the permitted period.
- Accommodation information and the address used for the Thailand Digital Arrival Card.
- Evidence that the visit is genuinely temporary, including funds when requested.
- Any documents listed by the embassy or e-Visa category used for the application.
Immigration may ask questions or request supporting evidence even when a traveller is eligible for exemption. Read our guide to proof of funds at the border and check the actual date stamped into the passport before leaving the counter.
Can a tourist stay be extended?
Some tourist and visa-exempt permissions may be extended at a Thai immigration office, subject to current rules, documents and the officer’s decision. An extension is not automatic. Apply before the existing permission expires and do not confuse the visa label with the permitted-until date in the entry stamp.
Common mistakes
- Relying on an airline post or social-media list instead of an official nationality check.
- Assuming a visa guarantees entry.
- Counting from the wrong arrival date or overlooking the stamp.
- Working while admitted as a tourist.
- Waiting until the final day to resolve an extension or status problem.
Frequently asked questions
Do I need a visa?
That depends on nationality, travel document, purpose and expected stay. Use our Thailand visa checker as a starting point, then confirm with the competent Thai authority.
Does the TDAC replace a visa?
No. The TDAC records arrival information; it does not grant visa status or additional days.
Can I work on a tourist entry?
Tourism permission is not a work authorization. Read the separate Thailand work permit guide before undertaking employment or business activity.

Thai spouse or child? A visitor may qualify for a separate extension of up to 60 days for visiting a Thai spouse or Thai child. It is normally available once during the current stay and has its own relationship evidence.
Tourist entry: distinguish the visa from the stay
Compare four different routes before travelling: a single-entry tourist visa, a multiple-entry tourist visa (METV), visa exemption and visa on arrival. Eligibility depends on nationality, purpose and the current rules. Under the revised rules effective 15 September 2026, qualifying visa-exempt tourist entry is 30 days; older articles describing 60 days should not guide your travel planning.
A tourist visa normally allows 60 days per entry, with a possible 30-day extension subject to approval. METV validity and the stay granted on each entry are separate: a six-month visa does not authorise an uninterrupted six-month stay. Check the visa’s entry conditions and the date stamped into your passport.
Keep evidence of onward travel, accommodation and funds available where required. Visa on arrival is a separate 15-day route for eligible nationalities, not a general substitute for visa exemption. Complete the Thailand Digital Arrival Card through the official system; it is an arrival declaration, not a visa. Recheck your category before booking repeated entries.
