Thailand’s public holidays affect banks, government offices, immigration appointments and everyday plans in Hua Hin. Alcohol-sale restrictions follow a partly separate calendar, so a day when offices are closed is not automatically a dry day.
This guide explains the difference, what to check before travelling to an office, and how to plan around the dates that matter when you live in or visit Hua Hin.
The three calendars to understand
There is no single calendar that answers every practical question. In Thailand, keep three related but different schedules in mind:
- Official public holidays: these are the national holidays published for government work and public observance. Government offices normally close, although special arrangements and replacement holidays can apply.
- Financial-institution holidays: the Bank of Thailand publishes the holiday schedule for banks and specialised financial institutions. It is an important planning reference, but it is not a guarantee that every government counter follows exactly the same opening arrangement.
- Alcohol-control dates: alcohol sales may be restricted on specific major religious days, election days and other officially announced occasions. These restrictions can apply even when a particular attraction or hotel remains open.
If you need to renew a visa, file a report, collect a bank document or complete a time-sensitive transaction, check the responsible office’s current notice rather than relying only on a general holiday list.
Public holidays and office closures
Public holidays are the dates most likely to affect immigration, banks, district offices, consular services and other administrative errands. Shopping malls, restaurants, hotels and tourist attractions often remain open, but their staffing and opening hours can change during long weekends.
The official 2026 holiday list published through Thailand’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs includes dates such as Chakri Day, Songkran, the King’s Birthday, Constitution Day and New Year. Lunar and substitute holidays can move from year to year, so the current annual notice matters more than a generic article published several years ago.
For bank planning, also check the Bank of Thailand financial-institution holiday calendar. The Bank of Thailand can announce additional special holidays or regional arrangements, including notices that affect Bangkok without necessarily closing every counter in Prachuap Khiri Khan.
Planning rule: do not schedule an immigration extension, residence certificate, bank-account visit or document collection on the last working day before a long holiday unless you have already confirmed the counter is open and you have allowed time for a missing-document problem.
Alcohol sales and dry days
Under the current 2026 update, alcoholic drinks may generally be sold between 11:00 and midnight. The former daily 14:00–17:00 restriction was changed after the Royal Gazette update reported by the Thai government and Tourism Authority of Thailand.
That general window does not remove other restrictions. Alcohol sales can still be prohibited or limited on major Buddhist religious days, election days and other dates announced by the authorities. Licensed hotels, international airport areas and certain licensed venues may operate under different conditions, but a venue’s exemption should never be assumed.
The legal drinking age is 20. Alcohol is also restricted in places such as temples, government offices, petrol stations, public parks and public transport areas unless a specific legal exception applies. Follow the venue’s instructions and carry identification when appropriate.
For the current rule and the exceptions described for visitors, see the Thai government’s alcohol sales and consumption guidance. A dry day may affect shops and ordinary restaurants even when the beach, market or hotel itself is open.
What this means in Hua Hin
Hua Hin is easy to enjoy on most public holidays, but administrative errands need more planning. The main issues for residents are:
- Immigration: check whether the Thap Tai office or the BluPort service point is open before travelling. Our Hua Hin Immigration Office guide explains the difference between the two locations and the types of service they handle.
- Banking: allow extra time around long weekends if you need a bank letter, account update, transfer confirmation or a document for a visa application. The Thai bank-account guide covers the documents that may vary by bank and branch.
- Events and markets: public holidays can make Hua Hin busier, particularly when Bangkok residents come down. Check the Hua Hin events and festivals guide and allow more time for transport.
- Visa deadlines: if your permission to stay or reporting date falls near a holiday, read the Thailand visa and immigration deadlines guide early and confirm the available filing route.
For everyday cost and availability planning, the Hua Hin cost-of-living guide is a useful companion. Shops and restaurants may stay open on a public holiday, but transport, deliveries and staffing can be less predictable.
Before travelling to an office
- Check the office’s own website, social channel or phone notice for the latest opening arrangement.
- Confirm whether your task belongs at Thap Tai, BluPort, a bank branch, a district office or another agency.
- Bring originals, copies and the supporting documents required for your specific application.
- Do not leave a visa extension, residence certificate or bank letter until the day before a long weekend.
- Save the next working day as a fallback in case the counter closes early or asks for additional evidence.

Frequently asked questions
Are Thai public holidays the same as alcohol-ban days?
No. Public holidays usually affect government offices and banks. Alcohol restrictions follow separate rules and may apply on selected religious days, election days or other officially announced dates.
Are banks open on Thai public holidays?
Many bank branches close on financial-institution holidays, but digital services, ATMs and some shopping-centre branches may operate differently. Check the Bank of Thailand calendar and your individual branch.
Is Hua Hin Immigration open on a public holiday?
Immigration counters generally follow official closure notices. Check the current notice before travelling and allow extra time around long weekends. The responsible officer’s instruction takes precedence.
Can hotels serve alcohol on a dry day?
Some licensed hotels and other authorised venues may operate under different conditions, but exemptions depend on the venue and the current rule. Ask the venue directly and follow its instructions.
